It’s time to fix net metering and advance Arizona’s solar leadership

November 01, 2013

Arizona has been a solar leader since Phoenix hosted the world’s first solar conference in 1955. Fixing net metering now will continue that tradition for years to come.
Rooftop solar systems need two things to work properly: abundant sunshine and 24/7 access to a reliable electricity grid. With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Arizona takes care of the first requirement. At APS, it’s our job to provide the second.
Under current rules, created years ago to encourage the growth of solar, rooftop solar owners depend on the grid but pay essentially nothing to maintain its reliability. Non-solar customers pay higher rates as a result. That’s not fair, and it’s not sustainable. As more homeowners “go solar,” the cost shift will become an even bigger burden.
Real solar leadership requires that we tackle the problem head-on and fi x it now, before it gets worse. We can protect customers who have already made an investment in solar by exempting them from any changes, while putting Arizona back on a path of sustainable solar growth.
Arizona ranks No. 1 in the nation for solar energy per resident and we’d like to keep it that way.
Let’s fix net metering now and continue Arizona’s solar leadership.
