Demand Rates

Demand rates offer more opportunities for customers to save

You can save with demand rates by making small changes to when and how you use energy:

  • Shift the use of appliances to off-peak hours. Set your dishwasher to run on a delay cycle, for example.
  • Stagger the use of major appliances during on-peak hours. Start the laundry after dinner (or do it on weekends).
  • Save on your overall usage by taking advantage of some basic energy-efficiency programs, tips and tools.
We’ve been offering demand rates to our customers for decades. In fact, our current demand rate plan is our fastest-growing with more than 120,000 customers enrolled.

Demand rates spur new home technologies

Demand rates are encouraging companies to develop technologies that enable customers to use the energy grid more efficiently.

Arizona is poised to become a testing ground for technologies that offer benefits to customers and the grid, such as reducing peak usage. Companies, including APS, are already researching how products ranging from programmable or smart thermostats and advanced load controllers to west-facing rooftop solar panels paired with battery storage can work together effectively for short- and long-term benefits.

Technologies such as high-efficiency HVAC systems, home energy management systems and electric vehicles are also being studied with an eye to the future. Learn more about how demand rates unlock new home technologies with this fact sheet.

Our recently approved rate review includes an experimental rate option that supports emerging home energy technologies.
